Professor of NIT Silchar dead due to COVID; fraternity in shock
Dr. Baban Shambharkar, professor, department of chemistry, National Institute of Technology is no more. “He has breathed his last yesterday,” confirms Registrar of NIT Silchar, professor Nalin Behari Dev Choudhury.
As per available information, he was declared “dead due to COVID 19” at a hospital in his native place in Nagpur, Maharashtra. “About 20 days back, his mother passed away and that is why he traveled to his native place. Otherwise, he was living in the campus of NIT Silchar,” informed Registrar Choudhury.
His fraternity is in shock. Dr. Baban Shambharkar did his graduation from Nagpur University and his Ph.D. from Visvesvaraya National Institute Technology Nagpur. He had joined the National Institute of Technology as Assistant Professor in 2013. Last year, he was the head of the department – Chemistry.
According to the Times Of India, fresh cases once again touched a new peak of 3.46 lakh in a single day in India while deaths hit a grim new record of 2,600 on Friday. “India has now reported close to a million new cases (9.94 lakh) in just three days, while Friday was also the fourth day in a row in which India reported more than 2,000 deaths in 24 hours,” reported the Times of India.
India Today reported that the maximum number of deaths due to the Covid-19 infection was in Maharashtra (773), followed by Delhi with 348 daily deaths. In the Cachar district, 92 Covid positive cases were recorded on Friday, the highest single-day peak in 2021.
