Gambling is a crime in Assam but since the night curfews and lockdowns have been announced, there is a significant rise in criminal activity. A man’s testicle was chopped off and he had to be operated at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Yesterday, SDPO Lakhipur, Partha Pratim Das led a team to raid in Shibpur. The police had a hunch that some illegal activities were going on inside a room in the Shibpur Part III area. As per available information, the Police tried to catch the gamblers red-handed a couple of times before. “Yesterday, we kept our cars far away and walked on foot to the suspected house. We caught five of them red-handed and recovered Rs 31,000 from them,” briefed SDPO Lakhipur, Partha Pratim Das.

The gamblers used to secure the key of the house from the caretaker as the owner leaves outstation. There they used to sit for hours and gamble with playing cards. While four of the five apprehended were locals of the Shibpur Part III area. One individual drove from Pailapool breaching the night curfew and thus violating disaster management authority’s guidelines. They were also found drinking and the Police seized bottles of alcohol.

“We have registered a case and we are investigating the matter according to the law of the land. We want to make it clear that gambling or anti-social activities will land people in trouble. Police is vigilant and these activities won’t be spared,” added SDPO Das.

Recently Vaibhab Chandrakant Nimbalkar took charge as Superintendent of Police, Cachar after Bhanwar Lal Meena got transferred. Nimbalkar, while interacting with the press said that the Police will be vigilant and efforts to curb antisocial activities will be intensified.
