10 declared dead in the last 24 hours, highest in one day at SMCH; doctors worried

Worrying signs as the number of deaths is increasing at an alarming rate in Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Vice-principal of SMCH, Dr. Bhaskar Gupta said 10 individuals have been declared dead in the last 24 hours ending at 5:00 pm May 26.

According to the information given by Dr. Gupta, Rekha Acharjee aged 66 years from Ghungoor, Cachar was admitted at SMCH on May 20 and she breathed her last at 10:15 p.m. on May 25. 60 years old Johura Begum Barbhuiya from Bashkhal, Dholai got admitted at SMCH on May 24 and declared dead at 10:30 p.m. on May 25.

While two in the last 24 hours had died on May 25, eight were declared dead on May 26 till 5:00 pm again an all time highest. Pratyush Nath (53) from Jaroiltola Borkhola, in Cachar was admitted at Silchar Medical College Hospital on May 24. He breathed his last at 12:20 noon on May 26. Sandhya Rani Das aged 74 from Bazaricherra, Karimganj district was admitted at Silchar Medical College Hospital on May 21 she passed away at 12:30 am on May 26.

Abdul Rouf Choudhuty (67) from Algapur, Hailakandi got admitted at SMCH on May 25 he expired at 1-20 a.m. on May 26. 52 years old Rubi Barman from PHE Campus Quarter, SMCH was admitted on May 23; she breathed her last at 3:00 a.m. on May 26. 60 years old Ayesha Begum Laskar from Dakshin Mohanpur, Hailakandi District got admitted at SMCH on May 25 and died at 3:15 a.m. on May 26

Nikunja Singha (58) from Dudhpur, Cachar District was admitted at SMCH on May 25. He breathed his last at 7:30 on May 26. Milan Rani Das (60) from Rajpur, Katigorah, Cachar got admitted at Silchar Medical College Hospital on May 26. She breathed her last at 8:20 a.m. on the same day. N Bimal Singha (52) from Binnakandi, kaptanpur, Cachar was admitted at SMCH on May 26 and expired at 10:40 a.m. on the same day.

Dr. Gupta said if we analyse the deaths it is evident that the patients are reaching SMCH in a critical condition. “Seven out of the ten patients declared dead in the last 24 hours succumbed within 24 hours of administration while one patient died within 36 hours of admission. On behalf of SMCH, we urge the patients to immediately report to a nearby hospital if they find their oxygen saturation levels have dropped below 94%. When the patient is brought to the hospital in eleventh hour, it becomes difficult to revive the patient,” states Gupta.

Currently there are 288 patients admitted in the Covid wards of SMCH while 95 are in ICU. 31 patients are in ventilator while 165 are on oxygen support. In the last 24 hours, 57 patients took admission in the hospital while 54 got discharged.
