Star cricketer of his time, Subir Dutta Roy is no more; died with Covid

65-year-old Subir Dutta Roy has breathed his last at Silchar Medical College and Hospital’s Covid ward. Today, at around 7:05 pm, he was declared dead. With a neurological complication, he was admitted to the Rahman Hospital in Guwahati. However, family sources informed that after he tested positive for Covid 19, he was brought back to Silchar and admitted to SMCH. On May 23, before leaving for Guwahati, he was tested for Covid and his samples were negative.

Subir Dutta Roy was one of the best players in 1970s and 80s. In 1972, he made his debut for Town Club and since then he has been a top player in domestic league. In 1974, he made his debut for senior district team and after that he established himself as a regular wicketkeeper and batsman. His biggest break came in 1987 when he was selected for a Ranji Trophy match against Tripura. The match was played in Silchar Satindra Mohan Dev Memorial Stadium. Though he wore the Assam Cricket Association’s logo but did not get a chance in the playing eleven. “So near yet so far,” narrowly missing out on the chance to play a Ranji Match lived with him as a regret throughout his life. Without even playing a match, he was knocked off from the squad and never got a call again. However, he played in Assam’s under 22 team.

In 1974, Subir Dutta Roy played for the district team along with his brother Sujoy Dutta Roy. In 1990s, he retired from Cricket and started coaching. Once he was one of the selectors for Assam Cricket Team and has coached the senior district team too.

The untimely demise of the lifetime member of Silchar DSA has shocked the fraternity. Secretary of Silchar DSA, Bijendra Prasad Singh said that the association will keep its flag half-mast tomorrow as a homage to the former cricketer
