Cachar Police arrests Katigorah's Block Development Officer; "Charges of corruption," says OC

Today morning, a team of Cachar Police led by OC Katigorah Manoj Narzary has arrested Block Development Officer of the circle Suja Hussain. He has multiple allegations of corruption against him. FIR was lodged against him, based on which a case was registered. He has allegedly meddled with funds sanctioned for various initiatives under The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act. He also has allegations of cash for job against him. Due to this, the complainants feel, genuine candidates got deprived.

Katigorah Police raided Suja Hussain’s residence in Hailakandi and arrested him. “Based on the FIRs and the case registered, we have arrested him today morning from his residence. He will be produced before the judge and actions will be taken as per law,” said Manoj Narzary.

There are allegations that he was not alone in the corruption. “Yes, he has charges of corruption against him. We are investigating the matter and at the same time, we are interrogating him. If there are others involved in this, we will detain them too,” added Narzary.

Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Act 2005 (or, NREGA No 42, later renamed as the “Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act” or MGNREGA), is Indian labour law and social security measure that aims to guarantee the ‘right to work’. This act was passed in September 2005 under the UPA government of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

It aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work
