Mass resignation in Silchar Congress; “Party sold soul to BJP so, we’ll join Sushmita Dev in TMC,” rebels

34 position holders in Cachar Congress have resigned from Congress to join Sushmita Dev at All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC). Today evening, the Congress rebels called for a press conference to announce that they have resigned.

Papon Dev, Congress leader who sought ticket from Borkhola but got denied, said that this is not the Congress Sontosh Mohan Dev wanted to see. “The party sold soul to BJP and Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF so, we decided to join our leader Sushmita Dev in Trinamool Congress,” said Papon Dev.

He added, “During the elections, we saw how Jitendra Singh and Aniruddha Singh handed over tickets to benefit the BJP. When the BJP had both their lists of candidates announced, we were still holding one after another meeting at hotels. Only after seeing the BJP’s list, we prepared ours to secure an advantage for Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP.”

Papon Dev and others said that they have already started working for the TMC in Silchar. “Together, under the leadership of Sushmita Dev and Mamata Banerjee, we will build the party bricks by bricks in Silchar and the entire Barak Valley. We will emerge as a strong opposition for the communal parties like the BJP and the AIUDF,” added Dev.

Sushmita Dev will reach Silchar the day after tomorrow and there will be a programme hosted to welcome her. A large number of senior leaders in the Cachar Congress is expected to join the TMC formally in her presence.
