Karimganj police arrests lawyer Kabir Ahmed Choudhury; dalals on the run
Dalals of several departments in the Karimganj district are on the run after the police have initiated a through campaign to nab each one of them. Although, many of them are yet to be apprehended, the police have set elaborate traps to nab them, hence the dalals could be nabbed anytime soon.
Yesterday, the Karimganj police stopped the car of Kabir Ahmed Choudhury, a senior advocate of the Karimganj district court, and took him to the police station. It might probably have been the first instance in the history of Karimganj district for a senior lawyer to get apprehended in such a manner.
Under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, the Assam Police is undertaking a continuous campaign against illegal dalals throughout the state. Circle, Sub-registrar and District Transport departments were all operating under the strong influence of dalals or middlemen. Whenever any person visits the Circle or Transport office for some work, a few employees of the department would redirect them to those dalals and would ask the concerned to go to them for their work. An employee of the circle office even went on to the extent of hiring a broker with a fixed income as well.
Now, under the strict order of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, no employee is redirecting anybody to those dalals for work. Similarly, in the Sub-registrar department, nobody would seem to get any assist after visiting their office until now. Just for the purpose of commission, a person would be asked to meet a dalal. People are now able to go to those offices with ease after the arrest of land brokers have started.
It has been learned that before submitting a written FIR to the police, Karimganj Deputy Commissioner Khageshwar Pegu collected the names of corrupt government employees and clerks from the circle officials of the five circles of the district. Circle officers secretly recommended the names of corrupt office workers and clerks in their offices in writing to the DC, a special source said. The Deputy Commissioner submitted the list to the police and filed a case against them. Then the police jumped into action, following which mass arrests began. However, many are still astonished at the fact that no action has been taken against the corrupt people in the Sadar Circle.
Meanwhile, fearing police arrest, the condition of the Circle office and the Sub-registrar office of the district is quite deplorable as of now. Those offices, where usually crowd of dalals would accumulate everyday as early as 10 in the morning, are almost deserted now. On Wednesday afternoon, the Sadar circle and the Karimganj Sub-registrar office were hardly populated by people, with no dalal in sight. In the Sub-registrar office, the post of clerks is sitting vacant, with hardly one or two office employees still working there.
The same situation is prevailing in all the circle and sub-registrar offices of the district. And the same situation is with the district transport office as well. Until now, it was almost impossibly difficult for anybody to enter the office due to the influence of dalals. And Wednesday’s picture is the complete opposite to that. Although DTO, MVI are present in the office, most of the staff seats are vacant. And many have even reported being on vacation. There was always a crowd in front of this office, and now deafening silence. Dalals are trembling with fear after the strict order of the Chief Minister and efforts are being made to find out who else’s name is on the list. In fact, the transport office was almost entirely occupied by dalals all this while until this campaign started.
Meanwhile, thr police have arrested lawyer and General Secretary of the District Congress, Kabir Ahmed Choudhury, who is also reported to be a very close associate of former state minister Gautam Roy and MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha. The police stopped his car and arrested Kabir Ahmed Choudhury and took him to the police station. While this report is being compiled, the police are continuing to interrogate Kabir. However, even after Kabir’s arrest, a large group of dalals from various government departments in the district are still on the run.
