No evidence against Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury, sent back home last night
Rumours are spreading thick and fast that Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury has been arrested by Cachar Police and is now behind bars. It is not true. Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury – one of the most respected gynaecologists in Cachar has walked home last night at around 10:00 pm.
For the freshers, 35-year-old Sumita Paul lost her life yesterday at Silchar Nightingale Hospital. The family members alleged that an eight-month-pregnant lady died due to the negligence of the doctors. According to them, she was supposed to be discharged on Thursday morning but the resident medical officer said that they can only discharge her after putting a prescribed injection. The same was done intravenously and within ten minutes, the patient stopped breathing. She was declared dead.
This sudden death of a pregnant woman who was deemed fit to be discharged irked the family members and neighbours. They started vandalising the hospital’s unit and even manhandled staff including Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury. They demanded that the Police must put handcuffs and arrest Dr. Choudhury and only then they will call off the protest.
The Police rescued Dr. Choudhury from Nightingale Hospital and he was escorted by a Police car to the Police station. He stayed at the Police Station till 10:00 pm and then he was allowed to walk free. A senior officer in Cachar Police said, “There was no evidence against Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury to arrest him.”
Moreover, another senior officer investigating the case said, “Dr. Paul Choudhury was not detained or arrested and therefore the question of release does not arise. He was rescued from the spot and kept in the Police station for his own safety.”
The Police officials also confirmed that there is no case registered directly against him. “One case has been registered to investigate the sudden death of the pregnant woman. The Police will investigate the matter. This is not a case against any particular doctor,” informed the senior officer.
This puts end to the fast-spreading rumours about Dr. Arun Paul Choudhury’s arrest and custody.
