Burning tires, blocked roads and Police Station gheraoed. Silchar’s Tarapur witnessed a huge protest today afternoon. “Won’t let go an inch of Hindu-land, won’t let Silchar become Bangladesh,” said Mithun Nath and similar slogans followed. The protesters were irked by Assam Police and “Hai Hai Assam Police,” slogans reverberated all throughout.
According to the protesters primarily consisting of members from the VHP and Bajrang Dal, the Tarapur Police was vehemently siding “Muslim intruders in a land dispute.” According to the allegations, Sandeep Das and family who have been on a plot in Ramnagar for 90 years at least, but three years back, they had trespassers trying to occupy the land.
The protesters alleged that Rehan Uddin and Gyas Uddin tried to erect a building and that is when they went to the court. “The Court ordered that no one can enter or exit the disputed land. Neglecting the court order, they have entered the plot with 300 people and started construction,” said Mithun Nath, Secretary Silchar Zone – VHP.
He said that a couple of days back, the same complaint was lodged at Tarapur Police Outpost but the FIR was not registered. “Not only that, when we complaint today, the Police officials went to the spot but did not stop the construction work. Why is the Police siding them and what is the conspiracy behind it is something that we don’t know,” asserted Mithun Nath while explaining why they were “compelled” to block the road and launch a protest.
Rehan Uddin’s brother Riyaz Uddin said that Rehan Uddin bought the plot following legal proceedings from Kajal Das. “Three years back, after Rehan Uddin bought the plot, a case was registered which got stayed by the High Court. Apart from that there are several cases that have been lodged, but there is no order that has been served to us which states that we must not enter the plot. We have bought the land and the construction is being done lawfully. If our construction is disturbed, we will take the legal course,” said Riyaz Uddin.
Eventually the blockade was withdrawn after additional superintendent of Police, DSP Headquarters reached the spot and negotiated with the protesters. “We have been assured that the construction is being demolished and actions will be initiated against the individuals involved in this activity. After this assurance, we have agreed to withdraw the protest,” informed Mithun Nath.
