
Cachar Police nabs 2015 kg Burmese Supari worth Rs 10 lakh; "2 detained," SP
During routine checking at the Lailapur Check gate, Officer In Charge of Lailapur Police Outpost, Bir Kumar Singha stopped a truck. The driver said the truck was empty and it looked so. However, the police officials spotted a gap between chassis of the truck and the body. That triggered suspicion and the officials started searching the truck.
Soon they found that there is a chamber at the base of the truck. About 150 screws guarded the chamber and when the officials opened it, they found hundreds of Burmese betalnuts lying at the base of the truck.
Superintendent of Police, Cachar, Ramandeep Kaur informed that around 2015 kilograms of Burmese betelnuts were seized. She added that two individuals have been detained and the Police is investigating the matter. As per reports, the market value of these nuts are estimated to be around Rs 500 per kilogram, which means the consignment is worth more than Rs 10 lakh.
Police sources informed that the two detained individuals are Jahid Khan (30) and Jamsed Khan (36) of Mawat, Haryana were detained with the truck (HR: 73 A 1271). The truck was plying from Mizoram and had entered Cachar through Vairengtee gate. Where was the consignment headed to is something the Police are yet to identify.
