Under treatment young boy who had consumed poison, jumped from 3rd floor of Silchar Medical College
In a dreaded incident at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, a patient jumped from the fourth floor ICU ward of the hospital and attempted suicide. The patient from Mohanpur Village of Hailakandi was admitted to the hospital as he consumed poison 2 days back at his home.
Hussain Ahmed Barbhuiya, a 28 year old man from South Mohanpur was admitted to the hospital on 26th December as he had poisoned himself in an attempt to sucide. At SMCH, he was admitted to the ICU and after treatment, he was cured. On Friday when his family members requested the doctors to discharge him as he was healthy, the doctors refused as he was admitted by Hailakandi Police. According to Hussain’s brother, “When I requested the doctor to discharge him as he was healthy, they informed us that they can’t discharge him unless the Hailakandi Police gives their clearance. Upon hearing this, our brother got scared and tried to escape the hospital and jumped from the fourth floor.”
Talking to the media, the sister of the injured Hussain Ahmed said, “We are ordinary people from an ordinary family. Our mother has passed away two months back and our family had scolded my brother quite a lot because he used to skip his namaz and was always on his phone”.
“The day before yesterday, he drank poison out of frustration. When we saw it, we rushed him to the Silchar Medical College. The doctors said that his brain had been damaged. After his treatment in the ICU, he was relatively stable.” the sister further added.
Since they don’t allow visitors in the ICU, the sister had told the attendants that, “I am also a worker of this sector, I have worked here before but I was still not allowed”.
When the patient tried to escape the ICU, the Hospital administration restrained him and informed the family of the injured patient. Somehow on the night of 28th he escaped and jumped from the 4th floor of the hospital and had severe injuries at different parts of his body. Hussain Ahmed’s brother had also mentioned to the media that, “after his accident when he was admitted to the hospital, the doctors asked us to purchase expensive medicines for the treatment. We are poor people and we don’t have that kind of money to purchase those medicines.”
How this negligence has happened in the only medical college of the hospital is a mystery. Even though the patient was tied and harnessed, it’s a mystery how he escaped. In her statement the sister had also said, “all we want is that safety of the hospital, all we ask for is that no one else goes through the same. No other patient should face this.” she said in conclusion.
