It was all hunky dory for the nexus that was minting money by illegally shaving hills after hills in Cachar district. But then came the evening of February 11. In Cachar district’s Udharbond – Notun Dayapur area, a huge is now almost leveled. The heavy-duty excavators have turned the hills into plains.

Today, during a similar exercise, land started slipping from the hill while the excavator was loading a tipper truck. The driver of the tipper truck was standing next to his vehicle and suddenly a huge pile of land fell on his head and he got trapped.

Identified as Hussain Ahmed alias Kuti Mona is a resident of Pangram Part III area and is a driver by profession. The landslip occurred at around 6:00 pm and he is still missing. NDRF and SDRF with the help of the local public have started a search and rescue operation.

The local panchayat representatives and other locals have alleged that it is due to the Forest Department’s ignorance, the accident took place today. “An organised racket has been operating the earthmoving business illegally for more than a year. The huge hill today is nonexistent and yet, the rangers or the field inspectors never stopped or reprimanded them. It is due to their lackluster attitude, today, we are on the verge of losing a human life,” said a member of the Panchayat.

Meanwhile the excavator driver and the handyman of the tipper rushed away with the vehicles abandoning him.
