Silchar's T Sumit Singha secures 6th rank in IIT JAM; "My dream to be in IIT Bombay might come true," he says
Another moment of pride for Silchar as T Sumit Singha clears IIT JAM examination 2022 with whooping All India Rank 6 with Geology optional. A final year student of Cotton University, who cleared this entrance for admission into IITs has bagged 74 marks out of 100. Sharing his exhilaration, Sumit said, “Had no idea this exam existed before entering college, but my IIT dream is a reality now.” 2581 students all over India competed for just 38 seats in this discipline and Sumit stands in the Top-10.
Breaking down his strategy and preparation the topper said, “I got to know about this examination as I entered Cotton University and my teachers told us about this exam and insisted we must start preparing for this in the first year. I gave it a try but couldn’t be serious in the First Year of college. From the Third Semester, I decided for a dedicated preparation and that’s where the actual journey began”.
Sumit Singha who would study for four to five hours daily reveals his mantra is to be consistent. He says, “Initially it was difficult but I realised consistency is the key. I studied only four to five hours, but I did that every day without any fail. I’ve been religious with the preparation and stayed true to myself.”
Sharing his dream come true moment, he said, “I never thought I would ever make it to IIT, but I had this manifestation deep down in my heart. I’ve dreamt of IIT Bombay and hopefully soon I will be a student there.” He further said, “I didn’t join any coaching institute because I believe in self-study and Geology is my subject of interest. I could study whenever I wanted and at the same time maintain a balance with my graduation classes. I did take up many mock tests and that helped me”.
An alma-mater of Kendra Vidyalaya Silchar, Sumit Singha is a resident of Rongpur. About this year’s exam, he said, “This year’s paper was relatively difficult and I was very nervous to solve this paper in the examination hall. But I used my strategy wisely, I answered the MCQ section very cautiously as it had negative marking but in the rest of the sections, I didn’t leave any questions unattempted. That did help me with what scores I’ve got”.
Sumit who lives in a co-shared stay in Guwahati had startled the entire floor on March 17 after his result was declared. He said, “I didn’t expect the results to come out this soon and when I got a call from one of my friends about this, it literally shook me. I thought my rank would be in double digits, but when I saw my rank, I couldn’t stop but screamed at the top of my voice. It was very overwhelming and an emotional moment for me”.
He will soon be an IITian says, consistency and dedicated preparation is the key, he says, “Subjects should be chosen wisely, not for getting a job, but for interest and research”.
The Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) is a common admission test conducted every year for admission into Masters of Science (M.Sc) and other post-graduate science programs at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). This year’s examination was organised by IIT Roorkee on February 13 and the result was declared on March 17, 2022.
