Trikal Chakraborty and Nabangkur Das rescued 13-ft-long King Cobra from a storeroom near Assam University
King Cobras love to live around bamboo shoots. But the bamboo forestry gets disturbed by humans as they cultivate bamboo to sell the shoots. This is where the man VS wild conflict begins. While settling who encroached on whose territory, one loses a life.
Yesterday, environmental enthusiasts Trikal Chakraborty and Nabangkur Das got a call from the locals of the Dargakona area in the Cachar district. They were informed about a venomous snake hidden inside the storeroom of a house near Assam University. They rushed to the spot to find that the snake was a giant King Cobra.
Trikal Chakraborty has so far rescued 226 snakes but he says, “I have never seen a snake as giant as this one.” Both Chakraborty and Das knew what they were dealing with however, they kept it among themselves. “Nobody would want to know that a snake as venomous as the King Cobra is hidden inside the storeroom. The locals would kill the snake as there is very little awareness about the consequences,” says Chakraborty.
For the records, King Cobra is a schedule one species of wildlife protection act 1972 and it is the national serpent of India and also the most venomous snake in the world.
After the struggle, Chakraborty and Das rescued the snake unhurt. “To our shock, it was a 13-ft-long snake weighing around 10KG. It was monstrous and this rescue remains as a special one,” said Chakraborty.
As per rescue protocols, the Forest Department was informed about the rescue and the snake was released in the woods which happens to be its natural habitat.
