As National Register of Citizens (NRC) proceedings reach its final stages, more and more incidents of fake documentation are making headlines. In Silchar a Bangladeshi Hindu citizen, 26 years old Nikhil Das submitted fake documents along with application for getting his name enrolled in NRC. He doctored documents and presented himself as a citizen of Koratigram (Rangpur) but the officials caught his trick during the family tree verification. Das was then handed over to local Police.

During interrogation, Das accepted the allegations against him and confessed that he indeed is a citizen of Bangladesh. His original residence is in Sylhet district’s Sunamganj area. Police sources informed us that Das entered India in 2011 by illegally trespassing through a border in Tripura. Since 2011 he was staying at a relative’s place in Rangpur area. Along with his NRC application Das submitted 1964’s refugee certificate, voter id card, PAN card and other necessary documents. “All the documents were forged by Das,” said a Police source.

In his statement Das mentioned that he paid an advocate a sum of Rs 8000 to get 1964’s refugee certificate and all other documents. Police has already launched a search operation to trap the corrupt advocate as he might have forged many other documents too.
