Argument between cadres of BJP and AIUDF in Hailakandi led to a volatile situation in the district. The long going debate around the construction of a public toilet in SK Roy Civil Hospital in Hailakandi has taken a new turn. Recently, BJP’s District President Subrata Nath sent his party workers to check on the controversial construction site, and there, the cadres of AIUDF attacked the BJP workers. Soon after the incident, a video started doing rounds on Social Media, where an AIUDF youth is seen throwing punches at BJP workers. The video also features a youth raising “Pakistan Zindabaad” slogans. District BJP has strongly condemned the anti-national activity and demanded immediate probe and arrest of the accused.
Meanwhile, AIUDF leader and Hailakandi’s member of legislative assembly Anwar Hussain Laskar has issued a statement stating that none of the miscreants involved in the brawl against BJP party workers belong to his party. In fact, he wrote to Hailakandi Police alleging that the youth raising Pakistan Zindabaad slogan in Hailakandi is a Congressi (Congress Cadre). “I, or the party have no relationship with the youth raising slogans in the video,” said Laskar. On the other hand, newly appointed Hailakandi district Congress president Rahul Roy denied Laskar’s allegation. He said, “The youth raising Pakistan Zindabaad slogan is a close aide of Anwar Hussain and is an AIUDF party cadre.”
District BJP members, under the leadership of Subrata Nath went to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to demand arrest of Hailakandi MLA Anwar Hussain Laskar. The delegation also informed the Chief Minister about the attack on BJP party workers. Police meanwhile has run a search operation and took a youth, named Nasir Uddin in custody for allegedly raising anti-national slogan.
If you are wondering how come the Congress and BJP are coming into each other’s aid, then let us take you to the root of it. There is no public toilet in SK Roy Civil hospital and Chief Minister Sonowal instructed the local administration to immediately construct one in the Hospital premises. Anwar Hussain Laskar, as the MLA of the constituency, got into action and he was allotted an area next to late SK Roy’s statue for the construction of the same. Former Member of Parliament Gautam Roy protested the decision to construct a toilet next to his father’s statue and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of the district. BJP also supported the memoranda and accused Anwar Hussain of cheap politics. Since then, AIUDF is under the joined BJP-Congress attack in Hailakandi.
