Karimganj woman alleges she was raped for 8 years, threatens to commit suicide if justice isn't served within 5 days
A woman has released a video stating that she has been raped for eight years by a Government institute teacher in Baraigram, Karimganj. The teacher is an influential man with deep connections with the current leadership (BJP), she mentions. She says the video is her last resort as she has not gotten help from any quarters including Patharkandi Police, and Social Media, Media among others.
She narrates her story, “I was married to a man in Siliguri and after his death, I returned to Patharkandi with my young kid. At that moment, the teacher who had known me since I was a kid, offered to help with a job. I went to meet the MLA and others with him and initially, it was all right. However, later he started to take me to discreet places where no other members of his family were present. There he would rape me and he has been doing this for eight years. He even took Rs 2 lakh and another Rs 3 lakh from me promising me a job against cash. I haven’t got the job nor the money.”
She mentions another boy in her allegations and accuses him of raping her at gunpoint. She says, “He offered to make my job card and took my number. Then he offered to give me a job at his workplace and I joined. Soon after that, he started giving me various assignments and won my trust. But then he betrayed me by raping me at gunpoint. He used to threaten to kill my parents, and my son and I used to get scared. He assaults me every now and then and raped me in his car and other places for eight long years.”
Her third allegation is against the Patharkandi Police. She says she lodged an FIR at the Police Station but the officers did not register his case. “Are they not registering the case as the accused are associated with the BJP?” She questions. She said that after four trips to the Police station, she did not get any help and so, as a last resort, she is making the video. “I beg for help to the chief minister of Assam, to the MLA of Patharkandi, to the MP of Karimganj, to DC sir, to SP sir, help me. Serve me justice within five days or else I will commit suicide,” she concludes.
Karimganj SP, Padmanabh Barua is out of the station and additional SP, Partha Protim Das refused to comment at this stage.
However, trustworthy sources in Karimganj Police mentioned, “Accusations are not backed by adequate evidence.” Officials in Karimganj Police recently met the complainant and she broke down into tears. The officers asked her why she didn’t lodge a complaint during the course of the eight years and she said, “She was worried that the teacher could cause her harm.”
The Police, as per sources lodged an investigation and even met both the accused. The boy she mentions has already blocked her and showed their WhatsApp conversation to the Police. Without going into the details of the conversation, the sources informed that the messages hint towards a different story altogether where the girl who also is a friend of the boy, messaged him several times to meet her and be with her. It is worth mentioning here that in the video, the complainant mentions, “The boy damaged my phone that had all the evidence of his torture and threats.”
The teacher met the Police too along with his wife and the Police noted there are several financial transactions between the two parties leading to a dispute. The complainant was asked to furnish proof of her allegations like, she has paid five lakh rupees to the teacher, that she got pregnant and had to abort, and that she has lodged a complaint accusing the teacher. The complainant is yet to furnish any such documents or evidence, as per the Police sources.
How the Police approach the case and how the complainant and her husband (present) deal with the vulnerability is something that remains to be seen. The Police now sit on a suicide threat from the complainant.
Please note: The name of the accused, name of the complainant, name of her first husband, and name of her second husband has been censored to follow the guidelines laid for reporting an alleged rape case. The identity of the victim must not be disclosed.
