Dead body of baby Leopard recovered from Katigorah
The dead body of a baby leopard has been recovered from road in Cachar district’s Katigorah. The dead body has been recovered from Rajatila-Haringa connecting road in Koroikandi. It is suspected that some vehicle traveling travelling in that route ran over the leopard. A team of Forest Department rescued the dead leopard.
The recovery of dead leopard has created sensation in the area. Residents of Katigorah are suspecting that more such leopards might be present in the area
Speaking about the leopard, Parthankar Choudhury, Professor of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University said, “It’s scientific name is Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758) and as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), it is a vulnerable species.
It is Commonly known as Nahorfutuki (in Assamese) and in Bengali it is variously called as Chitabagh, Chopbagh etc. but the local names here are variable.
Besides Katigorah, they have previously been reported from the Assam University adjoining Inner Line Reserve Forest areas also and is expected to occur in the Barail range as well.
On the pretext of showing bravery, our earlier generations have shot dead all its cousins, the magnificant Royal Bengals from barak valley.
Now, can’t we do something at least to save these spotted large carnivores, the next kin of Tigers?”
