Assaulting, urinating, humiliating: Hailakandi Police arrests drug dealer Nizamuddin after video went viral

Moral policing is a crime. Heinous crime. Not long back Assam witnessed the worst version of moral policing in Karbi Anglong where the mob killed two permanent residents of the state suspecting them to be child lifters. Another case of moral policing surfaced from the Hailakandi district of Assam.

A video went viral that features a young boy tied to a tree being beaten by another man. His head was shaved off, his entire body had wounds and he was begging for forgiveness. The man continued his assault which eventually ended with urinating on his head.

The inhumane act started spreading in the form of a video, and pressure mounted on the Police to take immediate action. In fact, the DGP of the state took cognizance of the matter and urged the Hailakandi Police to take immediate action.

SP Hailakandi, Nabneet Mahanta confirmed to Barak Bulletin that the Police has arrested three individuals including a woman. “The primary accused Nizamuddin Barbhuiya has been arrested. The matter is being further investigated. As per our records, Nizamuddin Barbhuiya was arrested a couple of times earlier by us in connection to smuggling of banned substances,” said SP Mahanta.

The Police arrested the trio from their residence in Krishnapur area located in Katlicherra, Hailakandi. The other two individuals arrested in connection to the brutal assault and humiliation have been identified as Aklashuddin Barbhuiya and Salma Begum Barbhuiya.

Meanwhile, Biraj Paul who was assaulted and humiliated shared his version of the story with the press. Paul said that he had gone to the residence of Barbhuiya to score four cases of drugs (heroin) in exchange of Rs 2000. “I paid him 2000 and he asked me to collect the cases from the box myself. I went to the box and took five cases instead of four which his mother noticed. Realising that I have been spotted, I threw one of the five cases and volunteered to get searched when confronted,” he said.

Adding. “They checked me and could not find the fifth one in my possession. So, they let me leave their residence. But since then, they have been calling me every day with various offers like high commission, drugs without cash among others. That day when I went there, they tricked me to their home and then they assaulted me which has been filmed.”

Biraj Paul has alleged that Nizamuddin Barbhuiya forced a 17-year-old to commit suicide and even killed a Police officer and few others. Police officials are now investigating the allegations to ascertain facts.
