Awareness rally against child marriage by Cachar district administration kicks off from DC office

On January 23, 2023 the Assam Government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a crusade against child marriage in Assam. Since the announcement on child marriage crackdown, a total of 4235 cases relating to child marriage have been registered till date in various police stations of Assam while 3047 peope have been arrested for the same including 93 females.

But only arresting people and registering police cases against them isn’t enough to uproot the evil of child marriage in Assam. Hence the Cachar district administration has started an awareness rally from today onwards to inform people about the detrimental effects of child marriage. The rally kicked off from DC Office in Silchar at 4 pm. The weeklong rally will cover all the blocks of Cachar district as well as all the 13 Police Station areas of the district.

Speaking to reporters about the rally Cachar SP Numal Mahatta said, “The main motive of this rally is to make people aware of the ill effects of child marriage so that we can secure the lives of people and the health of children. Honourable Chief Minister of Assam has taken a historic decision to stop child marriage in the state and we are executing that. Our crackdown will continue till child marriage is completely uprooted from the society and not a single case of child marriage is reported in our police stations.”

Addressing the press Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Rohan Kumar Jha said, “We are initiating an awareness campaign in the state against child marriage. This van of ours with social messages printed on it will travel throughout all 16 blocks of Cachar district and propagate awareness against child marriage. Through CDPOs it will travel various villages in Cachar.”
