SMC’s anti-ragging cell ineffective: DGP, Principal intervene after student confesses suicidal tendency

The primary role of any anti-ragging committee setup at an educational institution is to win the trust of its students. The committee needs to ensure that the anonymity of a complainant is respected. It becomes clear that the anti-ragging committee of Silchar Medical College and Hospital has failed to live up to that expectations.

It came in as a massive shock when a student shared an anonymous post to a confession page that goes by the name “Silchar Youth Confessions”. The boy mentioned that he ‘used to be a strong guy’ but after joining SMCH and facing constant ragging by senior PGs, his confidence has been hit.

“I feel like I am the most pathetic person. Yes, this is how my seniors treat me. I have no courage to speak up regarding this torture, if they come to know about my voice, they will literally murder me. I am mentally dead. And my body is not supporting anymore,” he wrote. The medical student added that the almighty has been unfair to him and he can’t even tell his parents about it.

Describing the tough times he has been going through, he wrote, “They shout at us for no reason. They express their frustration on us. Treat us like dogs, mainly in surgical branches like Ortho, Surgery, Optha. We work from 6:30 in the morning to 12:30, constantly. They don’t allow us to eat in time. Apart from this, we have whole night duty also. They shout everyday, in front of patients, in front of Medical representatives, in front of others. We are ashamed to death. Their scoldings are so loud that people gather to see us getting harassed. Opened my Facebook after ages and got to know about this page which helps.”

On a final note, he added that his dream has been shattered and he doesn’t want to stay there. “I dont need this degree in exchange of my life. Just I wish to make our Principal Sir Dr B.K. Bezbarua Sir aware of this situation. Is there no antiragging committee? Anyone who can help us? Anyone who can save my life?” he cried for help.

The post, as shocking as it is has attracted the attention from all corners. Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Babul Bezbaruah himself commented on the post. He has urged the complainant to write a letter to him. It is clear that the student fears doing so and only then he decided to put up the anonymous post.

DGP of Assam Police, GP Singh has also commented on the situation. The post was shared on Twitter tagging him and he requested for details in inbox for immediate action.

The question that arises here is why are the students of SMCH feeling that they are walking on a tight rope sailing on a life boat. Why is it that they are finding more comfort in anonymous posts than anti-ragging committee. This post might just open the pandora’s box
