Silchar's Bonep Sinha, Badarpur's Syed Abu Mohammad Yusuf to represent India in International Student Olympics Malaysia

In a proud moment for Assam as well as Barak Valley, two young shuttlers of the state, Boneep Sinha from Silchar and Syed Abu Mohammad Yusuf from Badarpur, have been selected to represent India in the upcoming International Student Olympics. The event will be held in Johor Bahru, Malaysia from June 9 to June 11.

Both Bonep Sinha and Abu Mohammad Yusuf performed exceptionally well in the 9th National Student Olympics held at Lovely Professional University, Punjab last year. Sinha had won the gold medal in the under-23 singles category in the Badminton competition, while Yusuf became the runners-up in the under-22 singles category. The duo had also teamed up to win the gold medal in doubles. It was their remarkable performance at the National Level Student Olympics that caught the attention of the selectors, and eventually earned them a place in the Indian team for the International Student Olympics.

Pradeep Bhardwaj, Secretary of the Indian Students’ Olympic Association, personally conveyed the selection news to Bonep and Yusuf over the phone. The shuttlers were thrilled to receive the call and were also informed about the matter in writing.

Speaking to the media, Yusuf said that he and Bonep will take a flight from Silchar to Chennai on June 8, before flying to Malaysia the next day.

A total of 27 students from India will participate in the International Student Olympics, and it is a matter of great pride for Assam as well as Barak Valley that both Bonep Sinha and Syed Abu Mohammad Yusuf will be representing the state at the event. As the only representatives from Assam, the duo will carry the hopes of their state and their country on their shoulders.
