Photo Voter List for Silchar Municipal Corporation Elections 2023 to be Published on May 29, Draft List on May 8
In a significant development towards the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation Elections 2023, the Cachar District Administration has designated 42 Government Offices in the district as registration offices for the preparation and publication of the digital photo voter list. Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, Rohan Kumar Jha’s administration informed that the final digital photo voter list will be published on May 29, while the draft voter list will be published on May 8. This comes as a stepping stone to the first-ever Municipality Corporation election in the history of Silchar and is being seen as a landmark event in the region.
The Cabinet of Assam had approved the proposal to upgrade the Silchar Municipal Board to Silchar Municipal Corporation on September 30, 2021. Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the approval during a press briefing after the cabinet meeting. “It is an up-gradation of the Municipal body,” he had said back then.
On January 5, 2023, the former Governor of Assam, Professor Jagdish Mukhi, had announced the constitution of a delimitation board. The mandate for the board is to expedite the process of ward-wise delimitation. Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty has been nominated as a board member, along with Hemant Bhuiyan, joint secretary of the housing and urban affairs department, Bimal Oswal, a social worker and lawyer, and two other members, including an additional DC of Cachar and executive officer of the Silchar Municipal Board.
With the announcement of the digital photo voter list preparation and publication, the people of Silchar are gearing up for the upcoming elections. The upgrade of the Silchar Municipal Board to Silchar Municipal Corporation is expected to bring in more development and growth to the region.
Currently, the BJP dominates the electoral politics in Silchar. However, the party has multiple members chasing the party’s ticket to election. This race between party workers can cause infighting within the BJP and how MP Rajdeep Roy, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty handle the situation is something that remains to be seen. On the other hand, there is an absolute chaos among the opposition. The opposing parties like Indian National Congress, All India Trinamool Congress, AIUDF among others are yet to chalk out a strategy. In such a situation, unless the infighting creates cracks and the opposition get a Harry Potter’s wand, it looks like another whitewash for the BJP.
