Assam Cabinet announces monetary compensation for Doloo Tea Estate workers affected due to proposed Greenfield Airport

The Assam cabinet led by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took a historic decision in which it was proposed to pay Rs. 1 lakh rupees to 1,496 casual labour families of Doloo Tea Estate and Rs. 2.50 lakh rupees for construction of houses to 173 families who would be displaced for the proposed Greenfield Airport.

It maybe mentioned that last year around this time, the Cachar Police had employed 150 JCBs and excavators to clear the tea plantation from Doloo Tea Estate for the proposed Greenfield Airport to be set up at that place. The district administration had also conducted a flag march in the area where the airport is supposed to be built. At that time the Government had failed to convince the tea garden workers that the proposed airport won’t disrupt their livelihood. However, this new cabinet decision may lead to satisfaction among the tea garden workers.

A few other cabinet decisions were taken today including issue of Driving Licence and Registration Certificate by Assam Transport Department in electronic, self-printable PDF format. The department will completely stop the issue of QR-based Smart Card of Driving Licence and Registration Certificate after 3 months. This decision is expected to ensure hassle-free citizen- centric public service delivery and benefit the public by saving valuable time and money. It will also address issues like postal delay in delivery/non-delivery of Registration Certificates/Driving Licences or loss of card.
