Haikuist Daipayan Nair's "tilt of the winnowing fan" launched
Barak Valley’s only ‘haikuist’ Daipayan Nair’s collection of haiku & senryu “tilt of the winnowing fan” was launched last Friday in Silchar at his residence “DEEDWAJH” in R.R. Shome Road, Itkhola. The book was launched by Daipayan’s mother and distinguished Bengali author, Jhumur Panday, Retired HOD of English Dept. (Cachar College), Sontosh Ranjan Chakraborty and Professor of Bengali Dept. (Assam University), Tripti Paul Choudhury.
Haiku form belongs to the Japanese Poetry tradition. It is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. Daipayan Nair’s exploration of poetry started with writing free verse but after coming in touch with Haikai Literature, the philosophy of Zen, and reading works of contemporary haikuists of India and abroad like Kala Ramesh, Pravat Kumar Padhy, Lev Hart, Brendon Kent etc. he started discussing and getting engrossed in Haikai Literature. Daipayan joined Triveni Haikai India in mid-2022 and his interest in Japanese short forms found a new voice under the mentorship of Kala Ramesh. His haiku, senryu and tanka have been widely published in many peer-reviewed international journals and anthologies.
This is Daipayan’s second poetry collection. The book has garnered much acclaim recently in the international haiku fraternity. The collection has been brought out by Hawakal Publishers, Delhi. Daipayan Nair is probably the only “haikuist” from the Barak Valley region of North East India. His first collection of lyrical poetry “The Frost” was published back in 2015. He was awarded the Reuel International Poetry Prize in 2016.
