Partial Reopening of Shillong Road Provides Temporary Relief Amidst Recurring Mudslides

Shillong Road, a crucial lifeline connecting South Assam, Mizoram, and parts of Manipur to the rest of the country, has witnessed recurrent disruptions due to mudslides near the tunnel at Sonapur, causing significant inconvenience for commuters. In a recent development, the road remained closed throughout Saturday and in the wee hours of Sunday, the East Jaintia Hills administration following the efforts of NHAI, opened the road for vehicular traffic, bringing respite to those stuck for hours on either side of the tunnel.

However, the respite was short-lived as continuous mudflow near the Sonapyrdi Tunnel forced its closure once again in the morning. Despite the challenges posed by these recurring mudslides, authorities are making relentless efforts to ensure the safe passage of travelers. At around 11:00 am, the administration has informed that due to the relentless efforts of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and their diligent initiatives to clear the debris and mud obstructing Shillong Road. The road has been opened partially.

While one side of the Sonapyrdi Tunnel remains open for traffic, the East Jaintia Hills Administration has issued a warning considering the possibility of more mudslides in the area. With the forecast predicting additional rainfall within the next 24 hours, the likelihood of further blockages near the tunnel remains high.

As a result, commuters are strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid traveling through this section of Shillong Road unless their journey is essential. Those who must travel are urged to carry sufficient food and portable drinking water to sustain themselves in case of delays or unexpected circumstances.

The recurrence of mudslides along Shillong Road has disrupted regular commuting and the smooth flow of goods and services between the affected regions and the rest of the country.
