TMC organises protest infront of SMB against alleged irregularities of Municipality
In a fiery protest organised by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) infront of Municipality Office, Silchar, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev unleashed a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticising their alleged negligence in the functioning of the municipality and the subsequent sufferings faced by the public of Silchar.
Under the banner of the TMC, Dev highlighted the absence of a duly elected municipality board in Silchar. She claimed that Silchar was the only place in Assam where no municipality election had been conducted, with the excuse of converting the municipality into a corporation.
Dev specifically pointed out the unfulfilled promises made by the Member of Parliament (MP) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of Silchar, who had pledged to clean Rangirkhal after winning the elections. However, they now allegedly assert that the area has been illegally occupied by others. The failure to address this issue, coupled with the absence of an elected municipality board, has resulted in public suffering.
The TMC leader accused the BJP of interfering in municipal affairs and arrogantly dismissed their ability to govern municipalities effectively. Dev questioned the BJP’s failure to ensure the proper cleaning of drains in every ward of Silchar before the onset of the monsoon season. She also raised concerns about the utilisation of funds allocated by the Finance Commission without the required board meeting after the cancellation of the elected board.
Dev further highlighted that the problems extend beyond Rangirkhal, as all 28 wards in Silchar are currently grappling with waterlogging issues due to the negligence of the municipality. Frustrated with the municipality’s failure to address these pressing issues, the Cachar Trinamool Congress organised a sit-in protest in front of the Municipality Office to bring attention to the situation.
The TMC leader concluded her address by criticising the BJP MLAs and MPs, stating that their actions are not aligned with the promises they made during elections. She called for immediate action to rectify the municipality’s shortcomings and ensure the well-being of the residents of Silchar.
