ABVP protests against alleged malpractices of AU authorities, Demands expulsion of "incompetent" Controller

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) launched a vigorous protest today at Assam University, decrying alleged malpractices by University authorities and demanding the immediate expulsion of the Controller of Examinations. The demonstration, organised by the RSS-affiliated students’ organisation, saw approximately 2,500 students from various colleges of Barak Valley converge at the University’s main gate.

The protest began with a procession towards the main gate, followed by a defiant entry onto the university premises, despite efforts by on-duty security personnel to bar their way. Inside the Administrative Building, the protestors created a tumultuous scene before eventually being compelled to vacate. They subsequently encircled the Administrative Building, initiating a sustained gherao that continues till the time of writing this report.

ABVP members asserted that the Controller has transformed the University into what they term a “Private Limited Company.” The delay in publishing results, they argue, has left students unable to pursue admissions in other Universities upon completing their courses. Furthermore, they cited a recent incident in which a student who raised concerns about result delays was allegedly coerced into an apology by the Controller and her result was withheld. The ABVP’s list of demands also includes the establishment of a Skill Development Centre and Digital Library within the University.

The protesters have issued a stern ultimatum, vowing not to vacate the University campus until the Controller’s resignation letter is made publicly available to them. The situation remains tense as the protest continues to gain momentum.
