Collapse of a roof in classroom causes panic in Adhar Chand School, highlights lack of maintenance

In a shocking incident at Adhar Chand Higher Secondary School in Silchar, Assam, during mid-term examinations today, the roof of a classroom collapsed, sending shockwaves through the school community and raising serious concerns about the safety of government schools in the region.

The unfortunate incident occurred during Class X and Class VIII mid-term examinations, causing panic among the students who were actively engaged in their tests. According to the school’s principal, who rushed to the scene upon hearing the students’ cries, the ceiling of the classroom had fallen dangerously close to a student. The classroom also housed a ceiling fan, creating a potentially life-threatening situation. The quick-thinking principal immediately shut off the fan to prevent any risk of electrocution.

Adhar Chand Higher Secondary School, established in 1940 and boasting a rich history, currently accommodates 832 students. However, a troubling observation made during a tour of the school by our correspondent revealed that many classrooms were in a deplorable state, with deteriorating ceilings. When questioned about whether the administration had been made aware of these structural issues, the principal confirmed that they had indeed reported the matter to the relevant department.

“The concerned department has been informed, and during the Gunotsav event, the honorable education minister himself witnessed the deteriorating conditions here. We were informed that funds have been sanctioned for renovations, but we are uncertain about when the work will commence,” the principal stated.

This alarming incident underscores the apparent neglect and lack of urgency displayed by the administration in addressing critical infrastructure issues in government schools across Silchar. This increasingly compels parents to enroll their children in private schools, despite the hefty fees.

The collapse of a classroom roof during an ongoing examination has shaken the community and exposed a pressing need for immediate action to ensure the safety and well-being of students in Silchar’s government schools.
