Centre Issues Advisory to States Amidst Rising COVID-19 Cases and Detection of JN.1 Variant

In response to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases across several States and the identification of the first instance of the JN.1 variant within India, Sudhansh Pant, Union Health Secretary, has dispatched a crucial advisory to all States and Union Territories. The advisory underscores the imperative need for sustained vigilance in tackling the evolving COVID-19 situation within the country.

Highlighting the collaborative efforts between the Centre and State Governments that have successfully maintained relatively low infection rates, the Union Health Secretary emphasized the continuous necessity of proactive measures. The evolving epidemiological behavior of the virus amidst Indian weather conditions and the co-circulation of other pathogens necessitates a steadfast approach to public health challenges.

Key directives outlined in the advisory encompass:

1. Festive Season Preparedness: States are urged to implement robust public health measures to mitigate the risk of escalated disease transmission during the upcoming festive season. Emphasis is placed on adhering to respiratory hygiene practices.

2. Surveillance Strategy: Effective compliance with the operational guidelines for the revised surveillance strategy for COVID-19, shared by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is stressed. The detailed guidelines are available for reference.

3. Monitoring and Reporting: States are mandated to meticulously monitor and report district-wise Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases across all health facilities. Timely reporting on the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP) portal is crucial in identifying early spikes in cases.

4. Testing Protocols: Ensuring adequate testing in all districts in alignment with COVID-19 testing guidelines is highlighted. Maintaining the recommended balance between RT-PCR and Antigen tests is stressed, with a specific push for an increased number of RT-PCR tests.

5. Genome Sequencing: Encouragement is given for an escalated number of RT-PCR tests, with positive samples to be sent promptly for genome sequencing to INSACOG laboratories. This measure aims to facilitate the swift detection of any new variants within the country.

6. Health Facility Preparedness: Active engagement of both public and private health facilities in readiness and response evaluations, as conducted by the Union Health Ministry, is advised.

7. Community Engagement: States are urged to enhance community awareness campaigns to garner continued public support in managing COVID-19, emphasizing the importance of respiratory hygiene practices.

The advisory underscores the critical need for collaborative efforts and proactive measures at both state and community levels to effectively navigate the evolving COVID-19 landscape in India.
