Silchar’s Rahul Singh showcased his prowess on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy clash against Chattisgarh, making a decisive impact with a crucial wicket. Assam, after winning the toss and opting to bowl, saw Rahul Singh striking early as he dismissed Chattisgarh opener Eknath Kerkar in his very first over.
The left-arm spinner’s victim, Kerkar, fell prey to a skillfully executed delivery, caught behind the stumps by Wicketkeeper Sumit Ghadigaonkar. Rahul Singh continued to impress throughout the day, delivering 27 economical overs, conceding 66 runs, however, he could not add to the wickets column.
Apart from Rahul Singh, Mukhtar Hussain, Mrinmoy Dutta, Akash Sengupta and Kunal Sharma picked one wicket each.
Chattisgarh managed to close the day with a score of 249 for the loss of 5 wickets, holding a competitive edge in the Ranji Trophy encounter. Captain Amandeep Khare (116) scored a century to take his team to a formidable position and he was supported by Ashutosh Singh (58) and Shashank Singh (29) who was not out at stumps.
Riyan Parag’s men will have a new ball in the morning and it remains to be seen how soon they run through the tail of Chattisgarh to give Assam a chance for first innings lead. This is the first match of the season and Parag’s men would love to secure some points.
