In 2017, a teenager from Guwahati signed up for India Club in Silchar, which was the entry to State cricket for Parvez Musharaf. Fast forward to February 4, 2024, and he notched up a debut century for Assam while facing the formidable Uttar Pradesh at their home ground in Green Park, Kanpur.
Musharaf consistently represented the top-tier Assam Cricket Association matches from Silchar and will continue to do so. Having clinched victory in the Silchar chapter of the Assam Premier Club Cup Competition, India Club anticipates Musharaf’s participation in the Zonal rounds and, if they qualify, the final stages of the tournament. India Club remains a crucial stepping stone for young cricketers aspiring to make it to the State team across various age groups.
Since 2018, Musharaf has been a reliable performer for both the senior and junior district teams of Cachar. Reflecting on his debut century, Niranjan Das, the Cricket Secretary of Silchar DSA, commended Musharaf’s consistent efforts. Speaking with Barak Bulletin, Das expressed, “It is a moment of pride for all of us here and certainly a historic day for Silchar cricket. Although he hails from Guwahati, making his debut in Assam Cricket from Silchar emphasizes his connection to our region. Witnessing him excel in his Ranji debut is truly gratifying.”
Niranjan Das also praised Assam Cricket for acknowledging outstanding performances. “It is a bold decision by Assam Cricket to entrust a 20-year-old as an opener in a crucial match against a formidable team like Uttar Pradesh. Parvez has demonstrated consistent performance, both with bat and ball, first at the under-19 level and then in the under-23 category. It is evident that Parvez earned his place based on merit, and credit goes to Assam Cricket for such a discerning selection,” affirmed Das.
Noteworthy is the guidance provided to Parvez Musharaf by his senior partner in the partnership, Rahul Hazarika, who also remains unbeaten at lunch after scoring a century. When Parvez unknowingly reached his century by sweeping a loose ball to the boundary, Hazarika intervened, encouraging him to remove his helmet and celebrate this iconic moment. The young 20-year-old was then praised by the entire dugout and the enthusiastic crowd at Green Park.
