Cachar Police registers FIR against Dr. Himabrata Das in Sexual Harassment Case

An FIR has been registered against Dr. Himabrata Das, a psychiatrist at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). This comes after a massive Me Too movement against him on social media where girls from 17-year-old to those in their 30s and 40s started sharing screenshots of messenger featuring his derogatory, demeaning, objectifying texts that can be deemed as outraging the modesty of women.

Many lauded Silchar-girl, now residing in Bangalore, Anwesha Chowdhury for her bold move start the movement by sharing screenshot of his messages. That encouraged other girls to come out in public and the one became ten and the ten became hundred within 24 hours.

Screenshots shared on public platforms by victims revealed a pattern of behavior where Dr. Das commented on the appearance of young women, objectifying them and asking them to get into conjugal relationships with him and doing all of that without any consent. Those who did not respond faced derogatory remarks about their education level. Shockingly, the allegations span a significant period, with victims recounting persistent harassment.

An account that goes by the name of Krishnakoli Pompa shared that she was a victim a couple of years back and had also come out in public. Dr. Himabrata Das is a talented quizzer, commentator and during the day, he is treated as a celebrity posing with the intelligentsia of Barak Valley. Academically, he has always been in the top-tier, cracked difficult entrance tests and excelled professionally. All of these, compelled Krishnakoli Pompa among many other victims to hold back for so many years. Not anymore said Anwesha Chowdhury and then it was an outburst.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta confirmed that an FIR has been lodged at Silchar Sadar Police Station against Dr. Himabrata Das. How the investigation progresses is something that remains to be seen.
