Hailstorm Impact, Woman Dies in Cachar; "22 districts, 900 villages, 52,899 individuals Affected" ASDMA
Severe storms, accompanied by hail, wreaked havoc across Cachar on the night of 31 March. Unfortunately, a 35-year-old woman, Shakhi Begam Laskar, from Dholai area lost her life when a tree fell on her house while she was sleeping with her 4-month-old child. Despite the tragedy, the infant survived.
On that fateful night, the people of Cachar faced relentless storms and hail. Many trees fell in various locations, one of them crashing onto Shakhi Begam Laskar’s house as she slept. Tragically, the tree struck her, leading to her untimely demise.
During the incident, Shakhi Begam Laskar had just completed her Namaz and retired to bed. Her husband and five other family members were also present in the house, all of whom survived the ordeal, except for Shakhi Begam Laskar. Her husband made valiant efforts to rescue her but, sadly, was unable to save her.
Prior to her passing, Shakhi Begam Laskar reportedly instructed her family to save the child and began praying before God.
The harrowing storm that swept through Cachar on the night of 31 March caused extensive damage, and unfortunately took the life of Shakhi Begam Laskar. Witnesses described the hailstones as large as stones, causing widespread destruction and leaving many scarred by the terrifying event.
Across Assam, people endured this severe storm and it resulted in multiple casualties. In addition to Shakhi Begam Laskar from Cachar’s Dholai, 17-year-old Pintu Chauhan from West Karbi-Anglong and 46-year-old Ruparam Basumatary from Udalguri lost their lives due to lightning strikes. Additionally, Samin Mandal of South Salmara died as a result of a boat capsizing.
The storm impacted 22 districts, affecting over 900 villages and approximately 52,899 individuals. With a total of four casualties, including six injuries, one individual is currently receiving treatment at Silchar Medical College and Hospital. A total of 406 houses were damaged by the storm, causing distress for many families across the state.
