Tripura bound bus overturns in Ditokcherra, one dead, 6 injured rushed to SMCH

In a tragic incident on the Haflong Ditokcherra Road, a Tripura-bound night bus veered out of control and overturned, resulting in the loss of one life and injuring at least 30 passengers. The deceased passenger has been identified as Devaraj Debbarman, hailing from the Dholai district of Tripura. The accident occurred around 10:30 PM last night, reportedly due to the deteriorating condition of the road. Despite the efforts of locals who rushed to the scene to rescue the passengers, Devaraj succumbed to his injuries before any medical assistance could reach him.

A Tripura-bound bus bearing registration number AS-01-NC-0243, heading from Guwahati, took the route via Haflong as the Meghalaya road was closed at Sonapur. When passing through Ditokcherra, the bus lost its control late at night and overturned. The injured passengers were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities, with six of them reported to be in critical condition. They were immediately transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, while others are currently receiving treatment at local hospitals. Of the six critically injured, a patient developed severe conditions and is being transferred to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for immediate attention.

Dima Hasao SP, Mayank Kumar spoke to Barak Bulletin and said “The bus overturned due to overspeeding. When it was crossing a turning on the road, the driver lost control and couldn’t control the bus. In this accident, 6 passengers were critically hurt and one of them, Devraj Debbarman died on the spot. The injured were transferred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital”.

The torrential rainfall deteriorates the roads connecting Silchar with the rest of Assam. The people of Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur also depend on this route for commuting with Guwahati and the rest of India. Owing to the frequent landslides in the road via Meghalaya, the incomplete parts of the East-West corridor need to be finished on war footing.
