Sujit Saga: Civil Society Groups Demand Arrest of Sujit Das Choudhury after HC Rejects Bail
The Silchar Sahar Shanti Srikhala Committee (শিলচর শহর শান্তি শৃঙ্খলা কমিটি) has renewed their demands for the arrest of Sujit Das Choudhury, presenting a memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, on Thursday. This demand comes in the wake of the Ashram Road incident, which occurred 40 days ago, with the main accused, Sujit Das Chowdhury, still at large.
Despite the court rejecting his bail plea four times, the police have yet to apprehend Das Choudhury, much to the disappointment and frustration of the community. The Committee, maintaining their faith in the law and administration, has expressed its concern over the delay in arresting the accused. On July 4, they submitted a memorandum to the superintendent of Cachar Police.
Committee officials questioned the police department’s inability to capture Das Choudhury, who remains a common citizen subject to the same laws as everyone else. The members emphasised that the country’s constitution is designed to deal with such offenders and called for immediate legal action against him. They also raised suspicions about the administration’s role in possibly shielding Das Choudhury.
“It has been 40 days since the incident and today again we have come to the SP with our demand to arrest this criminal. The person whose bail has been rejected 4 times by different courts, how does he remain free? People are scared that if such criminal-minded people roam around our society, their safety is under threat. An infamous land mafia who has snatched away plots of so many people and a criminal is in hiding in Silchar itself, he is meeting his family members, but our police force is unable to trace him. It seems like he has support from the administration or some invisible shield which gives him protection from being arrested”, said the members.
In their memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, the committee has urged for the prompt arrest and prosecution of Sujit Das Choudhury, warning that failure to do so would lead to widespread protests across the city. The members also mentioned that they won’t be coming with memorandums anymore if he is not arrested soon but will go for a bigger movement.
