ACKHSA Leads March in Silchar Demanding Justice for RG Kar Doctor

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, members of the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) took to the streets of Silchar on Tuesday to protest the horrific incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Wearing black cloths over their faces, the protestors began their march from the statue of Shahid Khudiram and traversed various parts of the city, eventually gathering at Premtala Point. The group expressed their outrage over the rape and murder of a Post Graduate Trainee doctor, demanding swift justice.

The incident in Kolkata, which has shocked the nation, involved the brutal rape and murder of a doctor within the hospital premises, an event that has sparked widespread protests across West Bengal and beyond. The case has drawn intense scrutiny, especially after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police, as directed by the Calcutta High Court.

Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, a key figure in the ACKHSA, addressed the media during the protest, articulating the group’s demands. He stated that those responsible for the crime, including several doctors and the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, must face the death penalty. Purkayastha emphasized the need for fast-track court proceedings to ensure that justice is delivered without delay.

Continuing his speech, Purkayastha criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of attempting to cover up the incident. He alleged that her actions forced the central government to intervene and hand over the case to the CBI, highlighting the deep mistrust in the state administration’s handling of the case.

The demands for justice are resonating across the nation, with various groups echoing ACKHSA’s call for the death penalty for those involved. The Supreme Court has also taken note of the case, ordering the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at RG Kar Medical College to ensure the safety of doctors and staff, amidst growing concerns of unrest.

The situation at the hospital remains tense, with ongoing investigations by both the CBI and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the West Bengal government to probe financial irregularities linked to the ex-principal. Junior doctors across West Bengal continue to strike, demanding justice for their slain colleague, further crippling the state’s healthcare system.
