Suspected Bangladeshi Rohingya Apprehended in Katigorah, Will Be Pushed Back Today: Cachar SP
A Bangladeshi youth, suspected to be a Rohingya, was apprehended by locals in the Talkargrant area of Katigorah, Cachar district, on Monday. The youth, identified as Mustafa Kamal, had allegedly crossed the international border illegally from Bangladesh to India, via Karimganj, before reaching Cachar.
According to local sources, Mustafa Kamal, a resident of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, managed to enter India with the assistance of agents from both sides of the border. He reportedly paid 15,000 rupees to facilitate his crossing. Residents of Talkargrant noticed the youth on Monday afternoon, grew suspicious of his activities, and detained him. They subsequently informed the police, who arrived promptly at the scene and took Kamal into custody.
Upon further investigation, police found an identification card on Kamal, which was issued by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and identified him as a resident of a Rohingya camp in Bangladesh. The police are currently interrogating him to gather more information about his entry into India and his intentions.
Speaking on the matter, Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta said, “He entered into India via Patherkandi into Karimganj, and he would be pushed back to Bangladesh tonight.”
The incident has raised concerns about the ongoing issue of illegal border crossings and the potential security risks associated with undocumented immigrants. Authorities are now investigating the network of agents involved in such illegal activities and are on high alert to prevent any further unauthorized entries into the region.
