Karimganj: Two Assam Police Personnel Killed in Tragic Road Accident in Patharkandi Bypass

In a devastating road accident, two Assam Police personnel lost their lives last night (October 17) after their motorcycle collided with a sand-laden truck on NH 8 near Asimganj on the Patharkandi bypass in Karimganj. The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when the officers, identified as Rajib Barman (38) and Badan Barman (42), were riding a Bullet motorcycle (bearing the number AS01EN4042) and crashed into the stationary truck (AS106464).

According to police sources, the truck, loaded with sand, had stopped on the road without any proper warning lights or flashing indicators, which led to the fatal collision. Both Rajib and Badan, who served at the 15th APBN in Eraligool, Karimganj, died on the spot. Rajib Barman, 38, was the son of Birendra Barman from Khilorbobd under Patharkandi Police Station in Karimganj, whereas, Badan Barman, 42, was the son of Baluram Barman from Damcherra under Ratabari Police Station in Cachar district.

Local authorities, including Patharkandi Police, reached the scene shortly after the accident. A local witness pointed out the negligence involved, saying, “The accident happened because the truck was parked on the wrong side of the road without parking lights. This is a regular problem on the Patharkandi bypass.”

Another resident raised concerns about the lack of emergency services in the area, stating, “There is no ambulance at the Patharkandi Community Hospital, and we couldn’t even send the bodies to the hospital on time. Later, the officer-in-charge of Patharkandi Police Station used his vehicle to transport the bodies.”

This incident has sparked outrage among locals, who have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better emergency services in the area. A resident expressed concern over the lack of emergency support, saying, “We don’t even have an ambulance in the area, and this delay in medical response is unacceptable.”

Legal formalities have been initiated, and an investigation is underway. The tragic accident has once again highlighted the need for improved road safety measures on the Patharkandi bypass, a stretch often plagued by similar accidents.
