EJH DC Imposes No Entry on NH-6 Lumshnong to Malidor Between 9 AM to 3 PM

The East Jaintia Hills (EJH), Meghalaa District Administration has announced a major closure of National Highway-6 (NH-6) from Lumshnong to Malidor, starting December 3, 2024, due to critical construction, renovation, and repair work.

The stretch will remain closed for vehicular traffic, including light and heavy motor vehicles, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM daily. Only emergency vehicles will be permitted under exceptional circumstances. This order is to be followed until further orders from the EJH administration.

The alternative road via Dima Hasao of the East-West corridor also lies in pathetic shape causing further worries for the people of Barak Valley. Adding to the problem is the mega block of NF Railway leading to several cancellations on trains plying between Badarpur, Agartala, Silchar, and Dullabcherra connecting Guwahati. The trains connecting Guwahati and Barak Valley are expected to remain suspended for yet another week, at least up to December 8.

NH-6 serves as a lifeline for the transportation of goods and passengers, connecting Guwahati, Shillong, and Jowai to Barak Valley, Mizoram, and Tripura. The road’s obstruction is expected to disrupt supply chains, leading to soaring vegetable and commodity prices across the region. The highway has long been in poor condition, with reports of frequent accidents, particularly involving goods trucks. The current repair work is crucial to ensuring safety and improving road usability.

Authorities urge commuters to plan their journeys carefully, follow detour routes, and pay attention to traffic signage for safety. The administration seeks public cooperation for the timely completion of the repairs, which aim to enhance the highway’s integrity and functionality.
