CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces State Mourning for Former PM Manmohan Singh
The Government of Assam has announced a seven-day state mourning from 26 December 2024 to 1 January 2025 in honour of Dr Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across all state government establishments, and all official entertainment programmes have been cancelled.
Dr Singh, aged 92, was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on 26 December 2024 after experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence. Despite immediate resuscitative measures and comprehensive medical attention upon arrival at AIIMS, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
In light of his passing, the Assam government has initiated a state mourning period to honour Dr Singh’s memory and contributions to the nation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on X formerly known as Twitter, stating that the national flag would fly at half-mast during this period and all official entertainment programmes would be cancelled.
Dr Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, becoming the first Sikh to hold the office. An esteemed economist, he was instrumental in liberalising India’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, implementing reforms that opened the country to global markets and investment.
His economic policies played a pivotal role in revitalising India’s financial landscape, leading to significant growth and development. The liberalisation measures he introduced reduced poverty and propelled India towards becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
Dr Singh’s unwavering dedication and service to the nation have left an indelible mark on India’s history. As the nation mourns his loss, heartfelt condolences are extended to his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to guide India towards prosperity and justice.
