Dead body of a physically handicapped boy found floating in a Silchar drain

In a sad turn of affairs, 24-year-old physically handicapped Haricharan Das’ dead body was found floating in Bishfuti area, next to Anukul Thakur’s Ashram in Silchar. Haricharan Das used to live with his elder sister and was missing since last three days. Today morning, fishermen saw a body floating in the Bishfuti drain, and alerted the police. Das’ family members also reached the spot and identified the body as him.

Local Municipality ward commissioner Rajesh Kumar Das, who was present at the spot informed us that Haricharan used to often row in the backwater. He suspects during flood, when the water level was high, Haricharan’s thermocol floater could have turned over, and he drowned.

Rajesh Kumar also added that Haricharan was not physically handicapped by birth, “He used to work as a helper (jugali) in construction sites and few years back, in an accident in one of the sites in Chencoorie road, Haricharan fell down from second floor and lost his legs, which made him specially abled. He is assuming that because he did not have his legs he could not swim back to the bank.

After Haricharan’s family members identified the body, circle officer was informed about the accidental death and the body is now sent for postmortem, “Since he is entitled to a government compensation as he drowned in flood water, it is important to do all the formalities properly. I am personally looking into it to ensure all the boxes are ticked,” said Das.
