Silchar Gears Up for Municipal Polls After a Decade; Electoral Roll To Be Ready by July

The Assam State Election Commission has kickstarted the electoral process for the forthcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation election by notifying the detailed schedule for the preparation and publication of ward-wise electoral rolls. This election, which is expected to be held in September 2025, comes after a gap of ten years.

As per Notification No. SEC.06/2025/24 issued on May 14, the Commission has outlined the following key dates for electoral roll preparation:

• Basic preliminary work: 19 May to 26 May 2025
• Mapping of constituencies and preparation of master data: 27 May to 2 June 2025
• Publication of Draft Electoral Rolls: 18 June 2025
• Last date for filing claims and objections: 26 June 2025
• Last date for disposal of claims and objections: 5 July 2025
• Final publication of Electoral Rolls: 8 July 2025

The rolls will be based on the Assembly Electoral Roll as of 1 January 2025, and the preparation will follow the procedure laid down in the Assam Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2022.

The notification also states that the appointment of Registration Officers for each ward has been finalised via Notification No. SEC.83/2022/74 dated 23 December 2024. Additionally, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the preparation of the Electoral Roll will be issued separately.

The Governor of Assam had approved the constitution of the Silchar Municipal Corporation on 28 November 2024, comprising 42 wards as per the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022.
