Clashes at Congress Camp in Silchar: MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder Accused of Corruption, Forced to Leave Party Event

Tensions flared at a Congress felicitation ceremony held at Rajiv Bhavan in Silchar on Thursday when a scuffle broke out among party workers, allegedly over accusations of corruption involving Katigorah MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder.

The situation turned chaotic while the MLA was addressing the gathering on stage. A group of party workers reportedly tried to confront him over allegations of selling a Zilla Parishad ticket for Rs. 10 lakh, leading to a physical altercation between two factions within the party.

Senior Congress leaders, including MLA Misbahul Haque and former MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, intervened to calm the situation. However, sensing the rising tension, MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder left the venue midway through the programme.

Shorful Alom Choudhury, a Congress leader from Katigorah, lashed out at the MLA, saying, “Congress MLA from Katigorah has been missing long before the election. He has been hiding since the time of nominations for the Panchayat Election. The Congress workers who won today (in the Panchayat Election) did so on their own. We lacked a guardian in Katigorah during the election. Today, when we came to the felicitation programme, we saw him sitting on a big pedestal trying to bring up old issues to harm the party.”

He further alleged that the MLA sold party tickets during the Panchayat elections and accused him of nepotism. “He gave a contractor’s licence to his college-going son. But when there’s an issue in Katigorah, he’s nowhere to be found. He was missing during the recent Chowronghee clash, but appears only when there’s money to be made from contracts. Voters of Katigorah lack a guardian they elect at the time of need,” Choudhury said.

Responding to the allegations, MLA Khalil Uddin Mazumder said, “Rs. 10 lakh is nothing for Khalil! There is a system through which party tickets are given, and it’s decided by a central committee, not me. If anyone can prove that I took even Rs. 100 in exchange for a party ticket, I will resign from my MLA seat today.”

He added that the clash was orchestrated to malign the party’s image. “A beautiful programme was arranged today, but it was disrupted by those who want to harm the party,” he said.
