Read the story in Bengali…

Historical moment for the people of Silchar and entire Barak Valley. Silchar’s Sukanya Bhattacharya Suri has secured a berth in the finals of one of India’s most prestigious beauty pageant – “Mrs. Universe India”. This is the first time a Barak Valley born participant has managed to reach such a feat. 40 finalists from the length and breadth of the country will compete against each other from July 12 onwards. After rounds of various competitions on July 15, 2018, we will have one among them being crowned with the title of “Mrs. Universe India”. The winner will then represent India in “Mrs. Universe” beauty pageant to be held in Manila, Philippines.

Sukanya Bhattacharya relocated to New Zealand after her marriage. She is the grand daughter of Bani Prakashini founder Late Malugram’s Harisadhan Bhattacharya and daughter of Late Women’s College former Principal Sumitra Bhattacharya. Sukanya informed us that her main goal is to generate awareness among people, “My motive behind participating in this pageant is not to make a glamourous modeling career. Instead I want to shed light on the darker side of life from a public platform, which, I believe will help people to stand up for their rights and self-respect,” she says.

Sukanya returned to Silchar with her husband and son last year from New Zealand. The family needed her and that is why she decided to head back home. Since then she has volunteered in various social awareness activities. “I want to generate awareness about domestic violence, and fight against it. Since I was a kid, I have seen women facing the brute of domestic violence; occasionally, I have intervened also. But I always wanted to do more and this competition provided me the platform,” she shared.

She participated in the competition by uploading a self-made video on the organising committee’s website. “Never really thought, I would make it to the finals. But, now that I am here I would give my best to win the competition,” she asserted. Sukanya Bhattacharya Suri cherishes the support and guidance she received from her husband Bhupesh Suri and credits him for her success in the competition.

She very much remembers the songs taught by her late mother, “I still sing them every now and then,” she shared. Chess happens to be her friend in leisure.
