Silchar's Sukanya Bhattacharya proves bold is beautiful; wins Mrs Brave title at Mrs India contest
William Shakespeare said, “Virtue is bold and goodness never fearful.” Centuries later, Silchar’s Sukanya Bhattacharya Suri proves his saying. A finalist of Mrs. India, a very prestigious beauty pageant, hopes were riding high on her. And Sukanya has made us all proud by winning the title of Mrs. Brave with her bold verses and beautiful actions. The only person who can bring in a change in the society is the one, who not only thinks, but also acts, “The world needs dreamers, and the world needs doers. But above all, the world needs dreamers who do,” said an author long back. Bhattacharya, in this contest, proved there are many who believe in doing.
She had no intentions of being a model nor is she attracted by the page 3, all she wanted is a platform to voice her opinion on domestic violence. It exists and cannot be ignored and she did it. 45 contestants were shortlisted for the final rounds which went on for a period of three days. From 45, 20 reached the grand stage, where they were questioned by a bench which included grooming expert Rita Gangwani. Gangwani trained and prepared many aspirants for beauty pageants and one of them was Sushmita Sen, to name a few others, Priyanka Chopra and latest sensation winner of Miss World 2017 Manushi Chillar.
“Our day used to start at six in the morning and went on till 3:00 AM. There were several sessions conducted by professionals and experts and after each session, there used to be an evaluation. We are told, on the basis of that, the judges came to the final decision. There were sessions on how to reduce crime, financial planning, entrepreneurship, and many other topics,” said Bhattacharya.
Though she did not win the Mrs. Universe India title, Mrs. Brave is no mean feat at such a stage, “It is an honour” she said, “All my life I have taken bold decisions. One such was last year, when I decided to leave my job in New Zealand, where I was drawing Rs 35 lakh per annum. This contest has been a learning experience for me. I used to think my story is the most challenging and unique but I realised during the course of this contest that I am wrong. Each one of the 45 had a story to tell and all were great stories,” she added.

The end of the contest is a new beginning for Bhattacharya. She plans to return to Silchar and form a venture which would help victims of domestic violence, “My maid came to me and said her husband pushed her along with her three children out of his house at three in the morning. Now my maid came to me as she knew me. And so we could go to the police station to file a case. There are many who have nowhere to go. I plan to create something for them,” she added.
Well, may the dreamer, the doer, the Mrs Brave get wings of fire and succeed in what she aims to achieve.
