"No Indian citizen will be left out. There is absolutely no need to worry," Home Minister Rajnath Singh on NRC

Talks on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will take time to die. After various leaders of Assam, Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke about the burning topic.

In Delhi today, Singh said that there will be no discrimination or needless harassment in finalizing what he asserted is only a draft list.

Singh in a statement in Rajya Sabha said, “The process is fair and transparent. We are doing everything according to the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court. Every step is being followed.”

He added, “I assure everyone that no Indian citizen will be left out. There is absolutely no need to worry.”

Singh also assured that there would be no action against those who have been left out of the NRC. Those not included in the NRC final list would be able to appeal to the foreigners’ tribunal, he said.

The home minister also hit out at what he called attempts at fear-mongering and disrupting communal harmony. “It is unfortunate that an atmosphere of fear has been created. Propaganda has been carried out through vested interests on social media to internationalise the issue and disturb communal harmony,” he said in the statement.

The NRC final draft was announced on July 31, 2018. Out of 3.29 crore people, some 40 lakh have been excluded.

Singh advised the people, “Please maintain peace, harmony and public order. To aid this, we have provided the Assam government with all the required security forces.”

The NRC was released on Monday. The government has clarified that the list is a draft and no one would face action if they were not on it. People would have a chance to furnish documents to prove their citizenship of Assam.

The chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee and her team has been aggresively protesting against the people left out of NRC, calling it an attempt to divide and rule. They also blamed it to being an attempt at targeting people who won’t vote for the ruling BJP. Mamata’s team was detained at the Silchar airport by the authorities, which further created a storm.
