At about 12:40 PM, Ministers of Assam Ranjit Dutta and Sum Ronghang landed in Silchar Airport with an urn wrapped in a red cloth. In the airport, Parimal Suklabaidya, Kabindra Purkayastha waited to receive them. At about 1:15 in the afternoon, Dutta and others checked out, and the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had arrived in Silchar. The golden coloured urn with ‘Om’ painted on it with red was kept at the center of the Airport and passers-by stopped to pay tribute to the Bharat Ratna.

From there, Kabindra Purkayastha and Parimal Suklabaidya lifted the urn and sacredly carried it out of the airport. The first stop was Salgonga Ashram. From there, they went to Kachakanti Temple in Udharbond. The third stop reminded all of Vajpayee’s unfulfilled dream. The urn was kept at zero point of the incomplete Mahasadak.

From there all of them moved to Police Parade ground. There was a big gathering waiting to pay respect to the ashes of the former Prime Minister. There was a platform for prayer, where people from all religion prayed and read their holy book. Our correspondent tells us, that the Bible, Quran and other Hindu texts were all placed together at the same podium. People of every religious community gathered together to send off their prayers to the deceased leader.
MLA of Sonai, Aminul Haque Laskar himself volunteered and read Quran. District leadership of Congress, AGP, CPIM and other political parties as well as representatives of independent organizations both new and old, paid tribute to the freedom fighter, who was also a tall statesman.
From Police parade ground, the final procession marched towards circuit house road and walked to Sadarghat. Thousands joined in the march and that is when Kabindra Purkayastha, who once served as a Minister of State (MoS) in Vajpayee government exclaimed, “Look at the crowd, this was a man loved by all and hated by none, such was his greatness.”
The march ended in bisorjon-ghat, top-level leadership climbed up on an anchored ferry, and the ashes were immersed, ‘Atal Ji Amar Rahe’ slogans echoed in the background.
