Violence in Karimganj college; ABVP-NSUI clash draws police forces

Since last few days Karimganj College has been making headlines for all wrong reason. Upcoming students election has resulted in serious conflicts between NSUI and ABVP. Today too the cadres of two students organisations stooped down to physically assaulting each other. Things went so far that Police had to siren their way to the college to bring things under control.

This morning the Annual General Meeting was held in the college compound. Like every year, in the meeting the existing elected members of the students body officially resigned one after another and the body was dismissed. At the end of the AGM, the date of election were to be announced and that is the root of the conflict between the two parties. ABVP demanded that the polling should be held on October 12, 2018 (Friday) while NSUI’s preference was October 13, 2018 (Saturday). According to students of the college present in the meeting both ABVP and NSUI tried to explain why it should be done on the respective day and gradually that verbal debate turned to an argument and eventually to a brawl. Two students and a professor got injured in the entire saga.

It did not end there, the students then went out of the college compound and started agitating on National Highway 37, tyres and effigies were burnt in the middle of the road which obstructed traffic. Police forces immediately rushed to the spot, “They were there agitating for about 10-15 mins. We went there and asked the teachers to speak with the students and sort the internal matters inside the college compound. The teachers came out and spoke to the students after which they all went inside and the road was cleared,” informed officer in charge of Karimganj Police Station, Utpal Bora.

As per our sources situation is still volatile inside the college campus.
