Bloodbath in Assam: ULFA militants murder five Bengalis in Tinsukia
United Liberation Front of Assam’s (ULFA) independent militants murders five Bengalis near Dhola in Tinsukia district. Today, late evening few Bengalis who were playing ludo and relaxing near their home were shot dead in open. As per the latest reports, five died on the spot and one is critically injured. Journalists in Assam say the death toll could rise further. The five dead have been identified as Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subal Biswas and Dhananjay Namsudra.
Taking strong note of the dastardly incident, the Chief Minister directed Water Resources Minister Keshav Mahanta and Minister of State (Power) Topon Kumar Gogoi to immediately proceed to the incident site to take stock of the situation. He also asked DGP Kula Saikia and ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla to rush to the site to tackle the situation.
The Chief Minister further said that the perpetrators of the crime would be dealt with a firm hand. He also directed all Deputy Commissioners and SPs to remain alert.
Moreover, the Chief Minister also condoled the death of the innocent people and conveyed sympathy to the bereaved families of the deceased.
Meanwhile, ULFA leader Mrinal Hazarika has issued a statement saying, “This might have happened because of openly criticising ULFA and actively supporting the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 in Assam.”
Sushmita Dev, MP Silchar tweeted about the killings, “Very disturbing to hear about the killing of five people in Tinsukia District. I hope the violence is not motivated by animosity towards any single community as is being perceived. I condemn the attack & express my deep sorrow for the family of those killed.”
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also tweeted, “Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development? We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest.”
